Description

Original Artwork

“This is the jewel in the crown of my Uganda Untamed show. It’s 2 meters wide by 1 meter tall and took me more than twice as long as any other picture I’ve done in biro; a total of 250 hours. I was inspired by a time we followed a pride of lions for about an hour and witnessed a hunt. During that time we saw the extraordinary behaviour of not just lions ambling around, apparently unconcerned, before becoming interested in a cob (a type of antelope) and then very quickly switching into hunting mode, but also the cob themselves. Upon seeing the lions they actually all lined up and moved closer to the lions. We couldn’t understand this, but apparently it’s a case of communicating to the lions that they have been seen and the cob move closer to keep an eye on the lions. This way, the cob cannot be surprised and will therefore easily escape if hunted. During our time with them I took many videos and photos, with at least 15 video stills and pictures being used as reference for this piece.

I draw with Uni-ball biros on raw linen canvas. To prepare the surface, I lighten the canvas with a very diluted gesso wash. Once this is dry, I draw with the biro, as I would with pencil on paper. After the drawing is complete, it’s varnished (to fix the ink in place) and more white paint is used to add light and finalise the composition. The ink is actually surprisingly versatile, in terms of its colour. If I want a blue tinge to the work I can layer white oil paint over it, or leave the canvas showing through to leave a sepia tone.”
