“Many years ago, we used to have flocks of sparrows in our back garden hedgerow. They became a regular part of our lives and we would be entranced by their coming and goings, getting a real sense of the community they had. Then, one year, they all disappeared. It felt like it was overnight, but I guess it wasn’t that quick. We then felt real joy when a smaller flock returned and took up residence in our front garden bushes. In fact, what inspired this piece was being able to hear and see these wonderful birds from my studio, as I was actually working at my easel. I was then able to listen to their chatter as I worked on this particular piece.
It was done predominantly in Bic biro, but I’ve also added white oil paint over the top of some areas. This is done to enhance the work, add to the sense of depth and increase the focus on the main subject matter.”
The frames for my smallest works are bought in especially, in order to keep costs as competitive as possible. They are made from Abachi wood, a lightweight hardwood that is perfect for high quality framing.
