Original Artwork
“Although unfinished, this is the seventh original from the wonderful project with Sussex Wildlife Trust, recording the life of Rye Harbour over the course of a year. Started on the reserve, this is inspired by the very special sea kale plant. Which is a very rare, perfectly adapted plant that thrives on the unique and increasingly scarce coastal shingle habitat that is central to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. The plan is to add the usual white oil paint, pouring light into the scene and bringing out both the flowers and the unique crinkly shape of the leaves.
I use un-primed linen canvas, treated with a very diluted gesso, as the base for a my artworks. I then complete the drawing in biro. once this is complete, I then varnish the work before working in white and black oil paints. This adds light, shadow, atmosphere and drama to create the final artwork.”
Framing
I frame my own originals and I try to keep them as simple as possible, to keep the focus on the art itself.
