“We were lucky enough to see a troupe of orangutans whilst visiting Borneo, back in 2010. I’ve wanted to do a portrait of these wonderful creatures ever since, as I generally don’t do any wildlife portraits unless I’ve seen the wildlife in their natural habitat. However, it’s taken me 10 years to actually do it. What struck me most about them was their slow suredness when travelling through the rainforest. These were not incredible acrobats, leaping and spinning across the canopy, but steady travelers, gently moving from place to place. I therefore wanted to place the Orangutan low in the canvas, to portray that solidity, in a way that connected them with the height of the trees at the same time. This was done by having the ape drop off the bottom of the canvas, whilst reaching up to the trees.
It was done predominantly in Bic biro, but I’ve also added white oil paint over the top of some areas. This is done to enhance the work, add to the sense of depth and increase the focus on the main subject matter.”
The frames for my smallest works are bought in especially, in order to keep costs as competitive as possible. They are made from Abachi wood, a lightweight hardwood that is perfect for high quality framing.
