Original Artwork
“Our trip to Slievenacloy Nature Reserve in Northern Ireland (owned by Ulster Wildlife Trust,) was without doubt exceptional. It was the 20th reserve visited as part of The Wildlife Trusts Project and we were escorted by Katy Bell and Ronald Surgenor, two absolutely fantastic members of the Ulster Wildlife Trust team. Whose knowledge, expertise, joy and enthusiasm were absolutely inspirational. We were there for many hours, as the sun set, exploring this large grassland reserve and watching out for any nature that happened to be around. You can read more about the visit on my blog page here, but the cotton grass and the jaw dropping moment a long-eared owl flew over us formed the inspiration for this piece. I wanted to capture the night-time feel as the long-eared owl passed over us and, as a result, this is much darker than my usual work, making it a bit of a unique piece.
This is being sold to help raise money for the fantastic work of The Wildlife Trusts, so if you love art and nature, you can have a piece of art and help nature at the same time.
I use un-primed linen canvas, treated with a very diluted gesso, as the base for a my artworks. I then complete the drawing in biro. once this is complete, I then varnish the work before working in white and black oil paints. This adds light, shadow, atmosphere and drama to create the final artwork.”
Framing
My originals are now framed in hand-crafted oak. It’s been made by Kristy Gray A fantastically talented craftsperson and wood genius. She works only with timber, sustainably sourced from her native New Forest. The frames are beautiful and set of the artworks fantastically.
