Original Artwork

“Again, it was dawn, that wonderful time of the day that inspired this work. That and the incredible setting of course, which is on the Keralan backwaters, India. We were there as simple tourists, which does come with its own issues, and pretty strong ones at that. You can read about these in a good article here, which is reasonably old now, but it was written the same year we visited. It is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been to, but one that is being adversely affected by the tourism that we were very much a part of. It’s something we’ve battled with over the years, and we now try to travel to a culture and then stay in one place, to try and really get to know that culture, rather than speeding around.

To try and reflect these tensions in the composition, I included the tourist boat we were on and the power cables reflecting the impact of humanity, that also joined the two, uneven, sides of the composition. The idea was to end up with a piece that is truly beautiful, but also reflects the tension surrounding tourism.

Unprimed linen canvas, primed with a diluted white oil paint, is used as the base for a biro drawing of the subject matter. Up to 6 bic biro pens are used in the creation of each piece of art.”

I make all my own frames for my original artworks, I use mouldings, paints and varnishes of the finest specification. The colours are individually selected to match each piece of art, ensuring the best finish possible.
