46th: Smardale – Cumbria

It seems that the 20th of November was all about the landscape. We’d just come from having our minds blown by the beauty of Foulshaw Moss and had arrived at a totally different landscape that contrasted nicely with the flat open landscape we’d just left, by offering rolling hills, valleys and human made viaducts that actually complemented the landscape in a way that few do.

We walked for about 5 miles out (and back) along the old train route, taking in a multitude of bird life and even a red squirrel on our way back, which is always a real thrill.

I have to say though, it was the views out across the landscape, around the larger of the 2 viaducts, that were the real highlight, and it’s really not often that I say that.

Needless to say, it was a real treat and yet again we’ve been exceptionally lucky to visit a
very special place.
