41st: Ventongimps Moor – Cornwall

It’s funny how quickly certain reserves become synonymous with certain things in our minds. With Ventongimps Moor (what a fantastic name by the way!) we saw our first dragonfly within about 30 seconds of entering the reserve and we continued to see them for the entire time we spent there, scattering them as we walked.

I think we encountered about 4 different species, although it’s difficult to be certain on that.

The reserve was Cornwall Wildlife Trusts first (being purchased in 1966) and is very boggy. However, the Trust had been extremely considerate and laid many, many stepping stones which made the walk a real pleasure.

A couple of the dragonfly species were also using the stones to sun themselves, I guess to warm up enough for hunting.

We saw mating pairs as well as, what felt like, hundreds of individuals flitting across our pathway, like a personal, miniature, red arrow display team.
