Reading up about Hutchinson’s Bank, prior to our trip, I learnt that it supports “a hugely diverse range of butterflies” and this was the deciding factor in planning a visit. I really want to do a butterfly piece, and this could have been the place for the inspiration to strike. Now, I have absolutely no doubt the place is teeming with butterflies at the right time, why would London Wildlife Trust lie?! However, on the day we were there, we didn’t see a single butterfly. We didn’t actually see much of anything, to be honest. As far as fauna goes, we did see a red kite and one bee. Mind you, this was probably because it was a very cold and wet late April day. The worst conditions you can have for butterflies, I think.

You can’t dismiss Hutchinson’s bank because of this though. It’s a beautiful example of chalk grassland and a fantastic place to spend some time. We did also catch a show of cowslips that were stunning, even if they were just past their best. There are also great shows of orchids later in the year that we may have to return for.
All in all, a wonderful place, but not the right conditions for a show of butterflies.
