29th: Close Sartfield – Manx (Isle of Man)

Labelled as Manx Wildlife Trusts flagship reserve, we had to give it a visit, even if the main reason for its status would be absent. In the end it had a huge surprise in store for us!

The place is renowned for its exceptional orchid display, and we were indeed far too late to see it in all its glory. However, just seeing the odd flower and thousands of seed head spikes, gave us a very clear idea of just how stunning it would have looked.

As we passed through the fields of orchids, Close Sartfeild delivered its surprise. Carol once again came into her own and pointed ahead of us asking “What is that… It’s a wallaby!!” You may think she was hallucinating but she was absolutely right, it turns out that a small group of grey-necked wallabies escaped from a zoo in the 1970s and they have been living wild on the Isle of Man ever since!

They’ve adapted pretty well and have actually managed to spread to some other parts of the island, but this is their stronghold and are pretty easy to see. We actually saw about 4 individuals and I have to admit, with all the extraordinary sights we’ve seen on this trip, seeing a wild wallaby jumping through a field on the Isle of Man has to be the strangest.
