23rd: Brook Vessons – Shropshire

We really had to work to get to this reserve, we climbed over fences and gates, fought through gorse bushes, tramped across bogs and clambered up very steep, slippery hills to reach it. Despite this, it was actually only a couple of miles walk, it just felt like a lot more. Once there, it was very much worth it as the ancient trees, small pastures and bogs made for a glorious mixture.

We tramped past the resident sheep (used to graze the area I assume) trying to find the most gnarled ancient trees we could. I was busy filming one of the trees, when I heard an animal break from cover and when I turned around I saw a hare disappearing at high speed.

As we walked back up the hill, through some ferns, another hare broke from cover, giving us a pretty good view of its long, black tipped ears and its impressive speed! I’ve wanted to do a piece of art inspired by hares for many years, maybe the time has arrived?!
